Ethical issues in genetics and infectious diseases research: An interdisciplinary expert review

  Abstract / 摘要

Background Research in genetics and infectious diseases (ID) presents novel configurations of ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSIs) related to the intersection of genetics with public health regulations and the control of transmissible diseases. Such research includes work both in pathogen genetics and on the ways that human genetics affect responses to ID. This paper identifies and systematizes the unique issues at this intersection, based on an interdisciplinary expert review.;Methodology This paper presents results of a formal issue-spotting exercise among twenty experts in public health, law and genomics, biobanking, genetic epidemiology, ID medicine and public health, philosophy, ethics and ID, ethics and genomics, and law and ID.

Heritability of sleep duration and quality: A systematic review and meta-analysis

  Abstract / 摘要

Epidemiological and interventional research has highlighted sleep as a potentially modifiable risk factor associated with poor physical and mental health. Emerging evidence from (behavioral) genetic research also shows that sleep characteristics are under strong genetic control. With this study we aimed to meta-analyze the literature in this area to quantify the heritability of sleep duration and sleep quality in the general population. We conducted a systematic literature search in five online databases on January 24th 2020. Two authors independently screened 5644 abstracts, and 160 complete articles for the inclusion criteria of twin studies from the general population reporting heritability statistics on sleep duration and/or quality, and written in English. We ultimately included 23 papers (19 independent samples: 45,328 twins between 6 mo and 88 y) for sleep duration, and 13 papers (10 independent samples: 39,020 twins between 16 and 95 y) for sleep quality.

Genetic association between major depressive disorder and type 2 diabetes mellitus: Shared pathways and protein networks

  Abstract / 摘要

Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are common public health disorders that often co-occur. This study aims to determine whether gene expression profiles from individuals with MDD or T2DM overlap and if there are any functional interconnectivity between identified genes using protein-protein interaction (PPI).;Methods The DNA microarray datasets were extracted from the Gene Expression Omnibus. Gene expression dataset GSE98793 from a case-control study of MDD (64 healthy control subjects, 128 patients) and dataset GSE15653 from a case-control study of T2DM (nine controls, nine individuals with T2DM) were used for this secondary and post-hoc analysis.
